  1. Think themed

Choose a cohesive theme for the design; from an animal kingdom safari to an aquatic adventure this will help to guide your choices on everything from colour scheme to suitable toys, books, artwork and textured objects to create the perfectly curated space.

2. Get personal

This is the perfect opportunity to incorporate personalised objects into the display - this not only makes the room feel special but also boosts your child's confidence and sense of identity.  Try our best-selling wooden name blocks in a complementary colour palette to tie in with your chosen theme.

3. Mix your materials

Mixing different heights, textures, and materials adds depth and interest to the shelves. Combine soft toys, wooden blocks, and metal frames, and vary the sizes of items like tall items and shorter toys. Think about grouping items in odd numbers (3 or 5) which tends to be much more visually appealing.

4. Put the fun into functional

Blend beauty with practicality by incorporating useful storage items into your design. Pretty boxes and baskets, stylish bookends and even decorative hooks can be both useful and attractive whilst really making the most out of the shelving. Leave some negative space (i.e don’t overcrowd your shelving with too much stuff!) to prevent the shelves from looking cluttered. This is crucial for a high-end look to allow each piece to stand out and prevent the design from feeling overwhelming.

5. The golden triangle rule

Proportion is all about the relationship between objects, and an easy way to achieve professionally styled shelves is by using the golden triangle rule.

This is a simple design principle that helps creates a sense of symmetry - the key to a designer look! Here’s how it works:

  1. Tall Item: Start by placing a tall item, like a vase or a framed picture, as the peak of the triangle.

  2. Medium Items: Next, place medium-height items, such as books or smaller framed photos, on either side of the tall item.

  3. Short Items: Finally, add the shortest items, like small decorative objects or toys, to the outer edges, creating the base of the triangle.

If you’re accessorising more than one shelf, this rule can be spread over the whole display. For example, adding a tall item on the top shelf and placing the medium and shorter items on the shelves below.

Contrast objects by selecting a mix of shapes such as circular items against more angular shapes of books and boxes to add interest, and finally, when it comes to arranging always think about balance.
