Little Berry Button’s Guide to Chic Scandi Style

3 minute read

Whether you are getting ready to welcome your bundle of joy into their new nursery or are looking to give a new lease of life to your little one’s bedroom, introducing Scandi style into your home is a great way to create a contemporary look as well as construct a play space that can spark their imagination.

Scandi

[ scan - dee ] · noun

Scandinavian design is marked by a focus on clean, simple lines, minimalism, and functionality without sacrificing beauty.

Monochromatic or tonal shades of white, grey or neutral colours are typically used to create a bright open area which can then be accented with touches of different textures - the result is a calm and cozy aesthetically-pleasing environment suitable for little senses.

Here are our top five tips for creating the ultimate Scandi inspired nursery in your home;

White Out

Fresh white paint is favoured as the best backdrop for your little one’s bedroom. Not only does this let in lots of natural light, it makes it easy to update or change colour later on as your child’s preferences change.

Pops of colour can be introduced through accent accessories, artwork or even painted murals - why not try a woodland or safari scene themes to introduce nature and the wild into the room?

Modern Minimalism

Mid-century style champions simple forms, clean lines and geometric shapes - this was also around the time that the Montessori method came to prominence, see our blog post on the principals and benefits here.

The ethos is that less is more for your little one, whether this is a curated wardrobe of key pieces, a book display that can be refreshed on rotation depending on their current favourites, or a small selection of sustainably sourced toys to pique your child’s attention and imagination - this establishes an interesting learning environment in their own room.

Multi-functional furniture

Invest in ageless furniture - natural wood is a great choice and instantly adds warmth to the colour palette. It’s important to incorporate pieces that are multi-purpose and preferably offer as much storage as possible. Fabric boxes or baskets are a great alternative to drawers, and are safer for little fingers when they are ready to start exploring the room.

Size down

Create a functional space by keeping design child-size - low hanging hooks to help them co-ordinate their outfit of the day, shelves within reach for their story books or toys, (which can also double up as visually stimulating decor displays) or incorporating small scale furniture such as chairs or desks are all great options that will encourage their independence and enable them to access everything they need.

Style it out

Personalise their space with pretty touches to bring colour and creativity. Fairy lights, bunting or wall hangings are perfect for adding wonder and whimsy to a neutral scheme - our new glitter star bunting pictured here is embellished with sparkles and available in a seriously chic selection of shades.

For little dreamers a soothing sensory cot mobile is a nursery staple. Babies will benefit from motor skills development and build familiarity with their sleep routine - reach for the stars with our gorgeous hanging cloud complete with gleaming gold stars by Picca LouLou.
